Preparations are buzzing in Aizawl and Guwahati for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s potential visit to Mizoram. Officials say he’s likely to inaugurate the much-awaited Bairabi-Sairang new railway project on September 13. This exciting development could connect Aizawl to the rest of India’s rail network for the first time.
The Bairabi-Sairang railway line stretches 51.38 km from Bairabi, near Assam’s Hailakandi district, to Sairang, just outside Aizawl. Once operational, it will make Aizawl the fourth Northeast capital with rail links, joining Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar. Senior Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials, led by General Manager (Construction) Arun Kumar Chaudhary, are working around the clock to finalize the project and event arrangements.
An NFR official shared with that they haven’t received final confirmation from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) yet, but they’re preparing full steam ahead. According to the tentative plan, PM Modi will speak at a public rally on the Assam Rifles ground and officially launch the railway at the new Sairang station. Union Ministers from key areas like Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Tribal Affairs, and Road Transport and Highways will join the celebrations, along with top officials.
Right after the inauguration, three express trains will roll out, linking Aizawl directly to Guwahati, Kolkata, and Delhi. This will make travel easier and open up new opportunities for people in Mizoram.
Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar, along with NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, recently visited the sites. They met Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma in Aizawl to discuss the Bairabi-Sairang new railway project and other plans to boost rail infrastructure in the Northeast. NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma highlighted that the Chairman focused on strategic steps to strengthen connectivity in the region.
This Bairabi-Sairang new line railway project is a game-changer for Northeast India. It brings direct rail access to Aizawl, fully integrating Mizoram into the national railway network. Sharma explained that it will supercharge trade, tourism, and passenger services while sparking socio-economic growth. It’s a dream come true for Mizoram residents who have waited decades to see trains chugging into their capital’s heart.
Built at a whopping Rs 8,071 crore, this engineering marvel features 48 tunnels totaling 12,853 meters—the longest one stretches about 2 km. You’ll also find 55 major bridges and 87 minor ones, including bridge number 196 that towers 114 meters high, making it 42 meters taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar. The project adds five Road Over Bridges, six Road Under Bridges, and four new stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.
NFR teams tackled tough terrain and huge challenges to pull this off, extending rail connectivity right to Aizawl. It’s a testament to India’s push for better infrastructure in the Northeast. Stay tuned for updates on PM Modi’s visit and the launch of this vital Bairabi-Sairang railway line!
