TN: Bathing ban at Courtallam waterfalls continues

Chennai – After a torrent of rain in Tamil Nadu’s Tenkasi district, officials kept the ban on swimming at Courtallam’s famous waterfalls for the fourth straight day. Heavy showers from the Western Ghats sent runs of water into Main Falls, Five Falls, Old Courtallam Falls, Small Falls and Puliaruvi, creating strong currents that could kill unsuspecting visitors.

Police and tourism officials say the restriction will stay until spring runoff slows and rivers quieten. Barricades have closed all major entry points and extra police guard the trail to keep crowds away from dangerous splash zones.

The rain tapered off by Saturday, and brief sunshine appeared, but the water’s force still worries safety teams. “The mud has cleared, but the current is still strong. We’ll keep the ban for now,” said a senior police officer.

Deepavali holidays and a four‑day weekend are drawing crowds to the region. Hotels, lodges and restaurants in Courtallam are full, but many guests were let down when they couldn’t splash in the historic cascades. Local traders hope the ban will lift soon to benefit their businesses during the festive rush.

S. Murugan, a shopkeeper near Main Falls, told reporters, “We get why safety matters, but if the flow eases in the next couple of days, we’d like the falls open again.” Officials from tourism and police confirm that they will reopen bathing areas as soon as water levels drop to safe levels.

Until then, visitors should enjoy the scenic view from designated safety zones while waiting for normalcy to return to this popular Indian waterfall destination.
