Trinamool plans mega anti-SIR rally in Kolkata on day one of 1st stage of revision exercise
Kolkata, Nov. 1 — The Trinamool Congress (TMC) will stage a big rally in Kolkata on Tuesday to protest the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. The same day marks the start of the first phase of the revision in West Bengal, which will see booth‑level officers walk through every household with forms to check voter details.
The march will begin at 2:30 p.m. in front of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statue on Red Road in central Kolkata and finish at the historic home of Rabindranath Tagore in Jorasanko, north Kolkata. Leaders set to head the rally include Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
A cabinet member said the state has already seen two suicides and a third attempted suicide, all linked to fears that voters could be removed from the rolls. “BJP is spreading fear under the guise of SIR,” the minister said. “We demand that no genuine voter’s name be deleted.”
On the same day, BJP’s opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari will lead a counter‑rally in Panihati, North 24 Parganas. He will accuse the TMC of stirring panic about the revision. BJP officials also question a recent death in Panihati, where a 57‑year‑old man allegedly took his life over concerns about the National Register of Citizens (NRC). They blame the TMC for misleading the public about the incident.
The rallies highlight the deep divide in West Bengal over voter list changes, with both sides claiming to protect citizens’ rights. The SIR process will continue across the state, and residents watch closely to see whether their names stay on the roll.
