Mumbai, Nov 2 – Bollywood star Emraan Hashmi says his upcoming movie Haq is a classic David vs. Goliath tale. The film draws directly from the landmark 1985 Supreme Court ruling in Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum.
Shah Bano, a 62‑year‑old Muslim woman, was divorced by her husband through triple talaq and fought for maintenance. The Supreme Court backed her claim under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code, saying that maintenance is for all citizens regardless of religion. The decision shocked conservative Muslim groups, who felt the court had stepped into personal‑law territory. In response, the Congress government led by then‑Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi passed the 1986 Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act. The law essentially overturned the court’s judgment and gave the Muslim community its own divorce rules.
The case sparked a national debate about secularism, minority rights, and the need for a single civil code. Hashmi told that Haq captures that tension. He portrays a powerful lawyer, inspired by the real Mohd. Ahmed Khan, while Yami Gautam plays a woman who has never been in a courtroom before. Their clash feels more like a David‑and‑Goliath showdown than an equal battle. “He’s a towering figure in law, and she’s fighting with little education and no legal background,” Hashmi explained. The actor says he stayed true to the script but added a touch of improv to bring the drama to life.
Fans can expect Haq on the big screen on November 7, 2025. The film promises to blend sharp social commentary with engaging courtroom drama, making it a must‑watch for anyone interested in Bollywood, legal battles, and India’s fight over rights and representation.
