Women’s Hockey Asia Cup: India lose 1-4 against hosts China in Super4

Indian Women’s Hockey Team Falls to China in Thrilling Asia Cup Super4s Clash

The Indian women’s hockey team faced a tough challenge at the Women’s Asia Cup 2025 in Hangzhou, losing 1-4 to hosts China in their second Super4s match on Thursday. Despite a spirited fightback, India couldn’t overcome China’s sharp finishing. Mumtaz Khan shone for India with a stunning goal in the 38th minute, while China’s Zou Meirong (4′ and 56′), Chen Yang (31′), and Tan Jinzhuang (47′) powered their team to victory.

The game kicked off with high energy in the first quarter. Both teams charged into the attacking circles, creating exciting chances. But China struck first early— in the 4th minute, Zou Meirong pounced on a rebound after India’s solid save and tapped the ball home. India pushed hard to level the score, earning their first penalty corner in the 10th minute, but China’s defense blocked it effectively.

Things stayed intense in the second quarter, with action flowing from end to end. No goals came, though. India ramped up the pressure in the final minutes of the half, dominating possession and forcing another penalty corner in the 27th minute. Still, they couldn’t break through, heading into the break trailing 0-1.

The third quarter brought more drama. Just a minute in, China doubled their lead with a lucky break—India lost the ball in their own circle, leaving Chen Yang unmarked for an easy finish. China earned their first penalty corner soon after, but it sailed wide. India roared back in the 38th minute when Mumtaz Khan fired an incredible back-handed shot from the edge of the circle, set up by Lalremsiami’s clever pass. That made it 1-2. China pressed right after, but India’s goalkeeper Bichu Devi made a brilliant reflex save on Zou Meirong’s close-range effort to keep the score tight.

China took control in the final quarter, sealing the win with two more goals. In the 47th minute, Tan Jinzhuang converted a penalty corner via a deflection off an Indian defender’s stick. Then, Zou Meirong added her second in the 56th minute with a clinical field goal, booking China’s spot in the final.

India showed real grit in this women’s Asia Cup hockey match, but now they need a strong performance against Japan in their third Super4s game on Friday. A win there could push them into the final for a rematch with China and a shot at the title. Fans are rooting for the team to bounce back!
