Workers find ‘skull’ encased in concrete at Boston pier, sparking mob hit fears

Construction workers at a Boston pier made a startling discovery last week when they uncovered what looked like a human skull embedded in concrete — sparking immediate speculation that it might be connected to an old mob hit, possibly even tied to notorious gangster Whitey Bulger.

The workers were cutting through a concrete section of the pier on Thursday when they noticed the distinct outline of a skull sticking out from a broken slab. Photos captured the eerie shape clearly, and the crew told NBC 10 Boston they “could not believe what they were seeing.” Police were called to the scene right away.

The object, believed to be a skull, was collected and sent to the medical examiner for further testing, igniting theories about whether it might finally help solve a cold case or launch an entirely new investigation.

“A gut reaction is to make some connection to a mob hit,” former Massachusetts state trooper Todd McGhee told NBC 10.

He added that the area appeared intentionally chosen because it was remote and unlikely to be disturbed — making the discovery even more intriguing.

Given Boston’s long and dark history with organized crime — especially the violent legacy of Bulger and the “Winter Hill Gang” — the idea wasn’t far-fetched.

But the mystery fizzled out quickly.

By Monday, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that the skull was not real, according to the Boston Globe.

How the fake skull ended up inside the concrete remains unknown, and authorities have not released any additional details about whether they will continue investigating the odd find.
