Mumtaz says Dharmendra ‘you are always with us’ as she remembers the ‘He-Man’ of Bollywood
Mumbai: Veteran actress Mumtaz paid tribute to Dharmendra in a heartfelt social‑media post. She shared photos from their 1973 film “Loafer” and wrote, “Dharam Ji you were and you are always with us! May you rest in peace (sic).”
In “Loafer,” Mumtaz and Dharmendra shared the screen for the first—and only—time. Director A. Bhimsingh also cast Om Prakash, Premnath, K. N. Singh, and several others in supporting roles.
The story follows Ranjeet (Dharmendra), a carefree loafer and pickpocket running for a gang, who falls for Anju (Mumtaz). Unbeknownst to him, Anju is secretly spying for the leader of a rival gang. With music by Laxmikant‑Pyarelal, the film became Bollywood’s seventh highest‑grossing release of 1973.
Dharmendra was due to celebrate his 90th birthday on December 8, but he died at 89 on November 24. He had been admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital after experiencing breathlessness, was treated, and discharged on November 12, opting to continue his recovery at home. He is survived by his first wife, Prakash Kaur; their four children—Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Ajeta, and Vijayta; and his second wife, superstar Hema Malini, with whom he had two daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.
On November 25, many Bollywood icons, including Hrithik Roshan with his father Rakesh Roshan, convened at the Deol household in Mumbai to offer their condolences. Other notable visitors during this difficult period were Ajay Devgn, filmmaker Farah Khan, Ananya Panday, Kajol, Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Jackky Bhagnani, Rakul Preet Singh, and filmmaker Abbas Mastan.
