Nepal’s Political Crisis: Gen Z Protests Push for Change Amid Leadership Vacuum
In Kathmandu, Nepal, a crucial high-level political meeting has been pushed back from 9 am to 2 pm today at the President’s House. Sources close to the matter say the delay comes as leaders scramble to address the ongoing turmoil gripping the nation.
This gathering will bring together top figures like Nepal Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, and senior leaders from the CPN (Maoist Centre). President Ram Chandra Paudel is also expected to join. The talks focus on forming an interim government after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stepped down amid massive unrest.
At the heart of it all are the Gen Z protests that have swept Nepal since September 8. Young demonstrators, fed up with corruption, political stagnation, and economic woes, took to the streets after the government banned social media platforms. Their anger has fueled calls for real change, turning the capital into a hotspot of rallies and clashes.
Gen Z leaders made waves at a press conference on Thursday, throwing their full support behind former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the next interim Prime Minister. Karki, Nepal’s first female Chief Justice, stands out for her strong record against judicial and political corruption. "We choose Sushila Karki as the best guardian for our country right now," said Gen Z leader Junal Gadal.
Diwakar Dangal, another key voice in the movement, put it bluntly: "We’re fighting this because corruption is everywhere—it’s rampant." The youth say political deadlock and inequality have left them no choice but to mobilize. They aren’t aiming to rewrite the constitution, just amend it for fairness. Leader Anil Baniya added, "Online surveys from our supporters picked Karki. We’ll push for elections in six months."
Even Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah Balen has backed Karki, boosting her chances as the Gen Z movement’s top pick.
But the protests have turned tragic. The death toll in the Kathmandu Valley has risen to 34, according to Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population, as reported by The Himalayan Times. Over 1,368 people have suffered injuries nationwide, highlighting the fierce intensity of the demonstrations.
As Nepal navigates this political uncertainty and Gen Z-led protests, all eyes are on today’s meeting. Could Karki’s appointment signal a fresh start, or will the chaos deepen? The nation waits to see how leaders respond to the youth’s demands for a corruption-free future.
