Jaipur, Dec 2 ( LatestNewsX ) – Rajasthan has formally changed the name of its governor’s residence from Raj Bhavan to Lok Bhavan, positioning the state as the ninth in India to adopt the new title. The directive was issued by Governor Haribhau Bagde and became effective on December 1.
In announcing the move, Governor Bagde said the new designation signals a departure from colonial-era terminology and a stronger embrace of India’s democratic ethos. “India is the world’s largest democracy,” he noted, adding that the Constitution’s Preamble starts with “We, the People of India.” He explained that in a democracy the people hold ultimate authority, which is why the governor’s office will now be called “Lok Bhavan.” This change, he emphasized, reflects public sentiment and aspirations rather than a mere renaming.
Governor Bagde also pointed out that “Raj” has long been associated with British administration, and that reverting to Lok Bhavan aligns with the central government’s push to eliminate colonial imprints from public institutions. Prior to Rajasthan, eight other states have already switched from Raj Bhavan to Lok Bhavan.
Similar updates are being planned in the Union Territories, where governor’s residences are known as Raj Niwas, for forthcoming renaming initiatives. Following the decision, all official workspaces and documentation are undergoing revisions: stationery, records, letterheads, and building signage are being replaced to mirror the new title, and the digital footprint has been updated as well. The official Raj Bhavan social media accounts have already adopted the Lok Bhavan name, and related digital platforms are being adjusted accordingly.
This renaming recommendation arose during the 2024 Conference of Governors and was subsequently formalized by a request from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in November 2025.
