Bhubaneswar, Dec 2 – The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has accused the BJP‑led government in Odisha of neglecting tribal and Dalit students living in state hostels since it took office.
During a press conference at Sankha Bhawan, the BJD headquarters, the party’s senior leaders claimed that six students in Nabarangpur district hostels had died over the last three months because of medical negligence, and they blamed the state administration for these tragedies.
Senior General Secretary and former MP Pradeep Majhi described an incident in which a seventh‑grade tribal boy was severely injured when a pressure cooker blew up in the hostel. The boy was denied medical treatment for nine days. Majhi said that, after learning of the case, he personally intervened, ensured the student received care, and drew the attention of district officials to the matter.
Majhi slammed the BJP government for failing to deliver good governance to Odisha’s residents, noting that the problems are widespread even under a tribal Chief Minister. He described the pressure‑cooker accident as shocking and claimed that officials ignored the boy’s need for urgent hospitalization because they feared harm to the government’s image.
According to Majhi, students in these hostels suffer from gross mismanagement – medical care is often delayed, and ambulances are rarely available for transport to hospitals. He added that six tribal students have died in the last three months due to inadequate medical attention, and that several seriously ill students were sent to hospitals by auto‑rickshaws, with about three dying on the way.
