Bhagalpur handicraft fair: Women entrepreneurs shine, govt schemes transform their fortunes
Patna: The Entrepreneur and Handicraft Fair, which is currently happening in Bhagalpur, Bihar, has grabbed headlines thanks to its lavish display of regional products and its focus on “Vocal for Local,” a pledge that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been urging everyone in the country to follow.
Beyond the wide assortment of home‑grown items, the real draw for visitors has been the stalls set up by Jeevika Didis and women entrepreneurs. Those who came for the fair reported a truly unique experience and vowed to back local businesses over imported ones.
Monica Kumari, a Bhagalpur resident, told LatestNewsX, “I started with just Rs 1,500 and now earn Rs 16.5 million a year, thanks to Startup India and the IT Ministry. A heartfelt thank you to PM Modi.”
Another Jeevika Didi, Lalita Devi, added, “My first day’s wage was 100 rupees. Then the Jeevika group paid me 10,000, later 50,000, and I received a 5‑lakh rupee loan from PMFME. Today I run my own company, my family is happy, and my kids go to a good school. I’m no longer a laborer; I own my work.”
Nikita Kumari, a farmer and millet grower, shared, “Watching Prime Minister Modi talk about the importance of millets on TV inspired me. I started farming them, and now I sell dozens of millet‑based products.” She is now self‑sufficient and employs almost 3,000 women, expressing gratitude to PM Modi.
Alok Rathore, a herbal business owner from Kannauj, remarked, “With Khadi India’s help, I grew my venture from Rs 50,000 in 2010 to Rs 20 lakh today. I employ 35 people, and CM Yogi and PM Modi’s Swadeshi slogan have given me a fresh start.”
In line with the motto “Development through Heritage,” the centuries‑old Manjusha painting from Bhagalpur’s Ang district is gaining a new identity after the Government of India awarded it a GI tag.
