‘Politics of riots’ won’t be accepted, CM Mamata’s reaction after Trinamool suspends MLA over ‘Babri Masjid’ plan

Kolkata, Dec 4 – West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told a crowd in Berhampore that the locals in Murshidabad would never buy into “politics of riots”. Her remarks followed the decision by her own party, the Trinamool Congress, to suspend MLA Humayun Kabir after he announced plans to lay the cornerstone of a mosque that would mirror the demolished Babri Masjid in the district’s Beldanga area, a move that drew fire from party insiders.

Speaking at the rally, Banerjee reminded attendees that Murshidabad has a long tradition of peaceful coexistence. “Here, the legacy of Siraj‑ud‑Daulah still commands respect, and the land of the Nawabs hosts holy places from all faiths,” she said. “The people of this region will not tolerate the camp‑fires of communal politics.”

She warned that the ruling BJP was exploiting religious sentiments in the lead‑up to the 2026 state elections, attempting to split the electorate along communal lines. “The BJP’s religion‑based messaging over the SIR issue is a dangerous gamble. Many of the casualties linked to SIR incidents were Hindus. This is a strategy that will only fracture our society,” Banerjee cautioned. She also pledged that West Bengal would not see NRC‑style drives or mass detentions, emphasizing her commitment to safeguarding minority rights.

The Chief Minister reiterated that her government would uphold constitutional principles and protect Waqf properties from encroachment, making it clear that any attempt to disturb communal harmony would be met with decisive action.
