Bengal SIR exercise: ECI warns BLOs of strict action for ‘deliberate’ data errors

Kolkata, Dec 4 – The Election Commission of India (ECI) has warned booth‑level officers (BLOs) in West Bengal that any intentional mistakes while uploading voter data during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) could lead to serious disciplinary measures. An official notice has been sent to all BLOs, urging them to keep voter entries precise and reliable. The letter, drafted in Bengali, reminded the officers that they are acting under deputation from the ECI for the SIR and that any deliberate or careless errors could trigger the commission’s full disciplinary powers. “You will have to ensure that the names of deceased, absent, shifted, or duplicate voters are omitted. It is to be noted that the main objective of this SIR is to ensure that no eligible voter is omitted and no ineligible voter is included in the voter list,” the communication read. Sources from the CEO’s office said the warning came after several “absurdities” and inconsistencies surfaced during data entry. “The commission, instead of initiating disciplinary action from the outset, decided to give BLOs an opportunity to rectify their errors, which is why this cautionary communication has been sent now,” a senior official added. The three‑stage SIR started on November 4, with phase one wrapping up as the draft voter list is released on December 16. After that, the notice phase—covering issuance, hearings, verification, decisions on enumeration forms, and handling claims or objections—will run from December 16 to February 7 2026, overseen by electoral registration officers (EROs). Final roll checks and ECI approval will take place on February 10, 2026, and the updated electoral list will be published on February 14, a shift from the original February 7 deadline.
