A 38‑year‑old mother from California was repeatedly stabbed by a homeless woman while she was in a Macy’s Herald Square bathroom, changing her 10‑month‑old daughter, police say. The attack happened on a busy Black Friday afternoon, when shoppers flocked the crowded flagship store. Authorities arrested 43‑year‑old Kerri Aherne, a Massachusetts native who is currently homeless. She faces charges of attempted murder, assault and possession of a weapon. The victim, who had been with her husband and child, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in a stable condition after receiving treatment for several wounds to her back, shoulder and arm.
A Macy’s spokesperson sent a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident and reminded shoppers that the safety of customers and employees remains the company’s top priority. In other news, the mother works as a civilian employee for the state sheriff’s office in California, while her husband serves as a sheriff.
