Haryana Farmers Face More Pain: Opposition Leader Slams Low Crop Loss Compensation
In Haryana, the battle over flood relief is heating up. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the Leader of Opposition in the Haryana Assembly, has hit out at the state government for what he calls a "big injustice" to farmers hit by recent floods. He shared his frustration on X (formerly Twitter), saying the compensation feels like "rubbing salt into the wounds" of struggling farmers.
Hooda pointed out that farmers often spend ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 per acre on inputs, plus an annual lease of around ₹70,000. So, when the government offers just ₹7,000 to ₹15,000 per acre for crop losses, it doesn’t even scratch the surface. "This isn’t just unfair—it’s a conspiracy to ruin farming in Haryana," he wrote. His words have sparked debates on farmer compensation and flood relief in the state.
This criticism comes right after Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced the relief package on September 8. The floods, triggered by heavy rains, damaged crops, homes, and livestock across several districts. The government has set aside ₹3.26 crore from a reserve fund to help affected areas. This money covers basics like food, clothes, temporary shelters, tents, animal fodder, fuel, transport, and even drainage work in rural spots.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the Haryana flood compensation details, aimed at easing losses from the disaster:
Crop Losses: Farmers get ₹7,000 to ₹15,000 per acre, based on how much damage the floods caused. But as Hooda notes, this falls short for many.
Loss of Life: Families receive ₹4 lakh if a loved one dies in the floods.
Injuries and Disability: For 40-60% disability, it’s ₹74,000. If disability is over 60%, victims get ₹2.5 lakh.
Damaged Houses: Full relief is ₹1.2 lakh for homes in plain areas and ₹1.3 lakh for hilly ones. Partial damage to pucca houses means ₹10,000 (for 15% loss), while kutcha houses get ₹5,000.
Shops, Businesses, and Industries in Villages: Compensation scales with the loss. For total damage up to ₹1 lakh, you get up to ₹1 lakh. It goes up to ₹1.75 lakh for ₹1-2 lakh losses, ₹2.35 lakh for ₹2-3 lakh, ₹2.75 lakh for ₹3-4 lakh, and ₹3.05 lakh for ₹4-5 lakh. For bigger losses over ₹5 lakh, add 10% of the extra amount on top of ₹3.05 lakh.
Livestock Losses: Milch animals like buffaloes, cows, or she-camels fetch ₹37,500. Sheep, goats, or pigs get ₹4,000. Non-milch animals such as camels, horses, or bulls are worth ₹32,000. Poultry losses are covered up to ₹10,000.
Haryana’s flood-affected farmers are hoping for better support as the opposition pushes for fairer crop compensation. With agriculture at the heart of the state’s economy, these relief measures could make or break the recovery for thousands. Stay tuned for updates on Haryana flood relief and farmer protests.
