Bangladesh Unrest: 7 Arrested After Hindu Man Lynched, Hanged From Tree And Set on Fire

Bangladesh Unrest: Seven Arrested Over Lynching of Hindu Man in Mymensingh
Bangladesh’s interim government on Saturday announced the arrest of seven people in connection with the lynching of a Hindu man in Mymensingh, amid growing unrest in the country following the death of political leader Osman Hadi.
Victim identified
The victim, Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old factory worker and follower of Sanatan Dharma, was beaten to death by a mob on Thursday over alleged blasphemy accusations. His body was later set on fire, according to police.
Details of the arrest
In a statement posted on X, interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested seven suspects during coordinated operations at multiple locations. The arrested individuals range in age from 19 to 46.
The suspects named by the government are:
- Md. Limon Sarkar (19)
- Md. Tarek Hossain (19)
- Md. Manik Mia (20)
- Ershad Ali (39)
- Nijum Uddin (20)
- Alomgir Hossain (38)
- Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46)
“RAB-14 conducted operations at various locations and arrested the aforementioned suspects,” Yunus said.
How the incident unfolded
According to police, Das was first assaulted by a mob outside a factory in the Valuka area of Mymensingh following allegations of blasphemy. He was then hanged from a tree. The attackers later left his body along the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway and set it on fire.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Government condemnation
The interim government condemned the lynching on Friday, calling it a “heinous crime” and stating that there is no place for such violence in the new Bangladesh.
“The perpetrators of this brutal act will not be spared,” the government said in its statement.
Rising concerns over minority safety
The incident comes amid heightened concerns over the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh. Hindu communities have reported a series of attacks following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August last year.
Tensions further escalated after unrest broke out in several cities, including Dhaka, following confirmation of the death of Osman Hadi, a prominent figure in the July uprising that led to the fall of the Hasina government.
Authorities have said investigations are ongoing and that further arrests may follow as the case develops.
