US President Donald Trump is set to sit down with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in New York for an important dinner meeting. This comes just days after an Israeli airstrike hit Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar’s capital, stirring up fresh tensions in the Middle East.
Joining them at the dinner will be Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy for the region. The get-together follows a quick but promising hour-long chat that the Qatari PM had earlier on Friday at the White House. There, he met with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Sources described the White House talks as “very positive,” focusing on Qatar’s key role in pushing for Middle East peace and strengthening defense ties between the US and Qatar.
The Qatari leader’s US trip happens right before an emergency Arab summit that Qatar has called in response to Tuesday’s Israeli strike. Trump himself weighed in on the incident later that day, saying he felt terrible about the attack happening on Qatari soil. He even called Qatari officials to promise it wouldn’t happen again.
Qatar has hit out at Israel, accusing them of trying to derail peace efforts. But the Gulf nation stands firm, vowing to keep mediating ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas. With ongoing Israel-Hamas conflicts making headlines, this meeting could play a big part in de-escalating the situation and boosting US-Qatar relations.
