India’s fuelers and drivers already fill the country’s road system every day – a report by Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shows that roughly 67 million people hit fuel stations each day. The numbers point to a growing energy need that matches India’s rapid economic growth.
Puri said India has become the world’s fourth‑largest economy with a gross domestic product of $4.3 trillion and recorded a robust 7.8 percent growth in the first quarter of FY 25‑26. He added that the country currently uses about 5.5 million barrels of oil a day – a clear indicator of how much energy India still demands.
The minister also highlighted infrastructure gains. India’s gas pipeline network, which now stretches 24,500 km, will reach 33,000 km by 2030, expanding access to clean gas for homes and industries. Under the Ujjwala Yojana, more than 10.60 crore households receive LPG connections, while 1.55 crore homes are supplied through piped natural gas.
CNG users benefit from around 8,300 charging stations nationwide, and the government has built 114 compressed biogas plants. “We are also scaling up projects in green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel,” Puri said on X. These steps aim to keep India’s energy mix greener and more sustainable.
The ministry seeks to finish the supply chain “on four strong pillars”: diversifying crude imports, promoting innovation, boosting domestic oil and gas exploration, and accelerating a clean transition via the Green Hydrogen Mission and the Ujjwala LPG program. Last week, Puri announced that 99 percent of India’s offshore area is now open for oil and gas exploration, and the import basket of crude has expanded from 27 to over 40 countries.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the energy sector is powering India’s march toward becoming a developed nation by 2047. The ministry calls the future “Viksit Bharat,” a vision that blends growth with clean energy.
