India and Canada are quietly rebuilding their ties after years of tension, with a key meeting between top security officials marking a fresh start. On September 18, 2025, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval sat down with his Canadian counterpart, Nathalie G. Drouin, in New Delhi. This wasn’t a flashy summit but a practical step toward a “new normal” in India-Canada relations, focused on rules, trust, and steady progress.
Sanjay Kumar Verma, a former Indian ambassador to Canada and now head of a think tank on developing countries, called the encounter a smart way to handle tough issues. “After two years of rocky times, both sides aren’t chasing the old days,” Verma wrote in India Narrative. “They’re building something new—step by step, with give-and-take, to keep disputes from wrecking the bigger picture.”
For India, the talk zeroed in on fighting terrorism, protecting borders, upholding sovereignty, and cracking down on cross-border crime. Canada stressed non-interference, the rule of law, and shielding against foreign meddling. Verma described it as a no-drama deal: “It’s about principles and systems, not showy politics.”
A quick win came right after the meeting. Canadian police arrested Inderjit Singh Gosal, a Khalistani extremist in Ontario, on firearms charges. India has long warned about Gosal’s role in Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a group banned in India since 2019 for pushing separatism and violence in the name of Khalistan. Past complaints to Canada often fell flat amid worries over free speech. But this arrest shows change—Canada acting on its own laws, without outside pressure.
“This proves structured talks can deliver,” the report noted. India sees it as progress on counter-terrorism, while Canada views it as staying true to its sovereignty. As both nations navigate sensitive topics like Khalistani activities and bilateral tensions, this rules-based approach could steady India-Canada relations for the long haul.
