The Centre for Development of Telematics (C‑DOT) and the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT‑GN) teamed up on Saturday to launch a new Centre of Excellence (CoE). The partnership focuses on cutting‑edge research in telecom and cybersecurity while boosting India’s ability to create its own technology.
C‑DOT’s CEO, Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, said the CoE will bring together the technical expertise of C‑DOT and the academic strength of IIT‑Gandhinagar. He stressed that such collaboration is key to advancing next‑generation telecom systems, protecting intellectual property, and keeping India at the forefront of global tech innovation. “It aligns with the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat,” he added.
IIT‑Gandhinagar’s Director, Professor Rajat Moona, highlighted the importance of self‑reliance in digital and communication technologies. “Security, growth, and development all depend on having strong domestic capabilities,” he said.
The new hub will tackle research in core areas where C‑DOT already leads, including mobile communications, cyber‑security, quantum communication, artificial intelligence, and advanced telecom applications. It will also act as a meeting point for students, faculty and researchers from IIT‑GN, as well as C‑DOT scientists, to work on real‑world telecom and ICT challenges.
Beyond research, the centre plans to support startups with incubation, mentoring and industry links. Training and skill‑building programs will line up with national telecom and digital transformation goals, helping create an industry‑ready workforce. Joint seminars, publications and patent filing efforts will further deepen the partnership.
With this move, C‑DOT and IIT‑Gandhinagar aim to accelerate India’s leadership in telecom technology, drive local innovation, and keep the country competitive in a rapidly evolving digital world.
