India’s demand for artificial intelligence (AI) skills is growing quickly. A recent report from Indeed’s hiring lab shows that 11.7 % of all Indian job postings listed AI in the description this September—up from 10.6 % just three months earlier and from 8.2 % a year ago.
The trend isn’t limited to tech companies. Nearly 40 % of data‑and‑analytics jobs now ask for AI knowledge, followed by software development (23 %), insurance (18 %) and scientific research (17 %). In engineering, industrial roles lead with 17 % of jobs mentioning AI, then mechanical at 11 % and electrical at 9.2 %.
Despite the rise in AI‑focused listings, overall job postings on Indeed fell 0.8 % last month, marking the sixth decline this year. The total number of openings is still 69 % above pre‑pandemic levels, though it is 22 % lower than the peak seen in January 2023. Senior Economist Callam Pickering notes that India’s share of AI mentions is second only to Singapore among key markets, underscoring how employers are “going all‑in” on AI.
The country’s shift toward formal employment is boosting job creation in the formal sector faster than overall employment growth. As AI reshapes hiring priorities, companies increasingly need talent skilled in data analytics, automation and other AI tools—areas where the current talent pool is still catching up.
This surge in AI job demand highlights the need for workers to upskill and for employers to adapt, ensuring that India’s workforce stays competitive in an AI‑driven economy.
