India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar sent warm National Day greetings to Nepal on Friday, promising to strengthen the strong ties between the two neighboring countries. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar said, “Best wishes to the Government and people of Nepal on their National Day. Committed to further deepening of our multifaceted partnership.”
This comes hot on the heels of a phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday. During the chat, PM Modi offered his condolences for the recent tragic loss of lives in Nepal and reaffirmed India’s full support for Karki’s work to bring back peace and stability to the Himalayan nation. He also extended National Day wishes to her and the Nepali people.
Sharing details on X after the call, PM Modi wrote, “Had a warm conversation with Mrs Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow.”
At a weekly media briefing in New Delhi on Friday, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal echoed these sentiments. He highlighted India’s welcome for Nepal’s new interim government and the ongoing support to ensure peace. “We welcomed the new interim government. Post that, we had a telecon conversation between our Prime Minister and Prime Minister Karki, where we reiterated and reaffirmed our steadfast support to Nepal that we will ensure all support in terms of establishing peace and stability,” Jaiswal said.
He added that as a key development partner, fellow democracy, and close neighbor, India stands ready to help Nepal restore calm quickly. “It’s a relationship where we will be working together for the progress and prosperity of the peoples of the two countries,” Jaiswal noted.
This support builds on earlier gestures. On September 13, PM Modi congratulated Karki on taking charge as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, stressing India’s commitment to Nepal’s peace and prosperity. Just a day before, on September 12, the MEA welcomed the new government’s formation under Karki’s leadership, hoping it would boost stability in Nepal.
India and Nepal share deep historical and cultural bonds, and these statements underline New Delhi’s focus on helping Kathmandu navigate its political transitions while fostering stronger bilateral relations.
