Delhi Airport Back to Normal After Friday Outage
Delhi airport operator DIAL announced on Saturday that flight operations at India’s busiest airport have returned to normal. The outage, which began on Friday, caused more than 800 flight delays and left many passengers stranded.
DIAL posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that “All flight operations are normal at Delhi airport.” The operator also reminded travelers to keep tabs on their airline for the latest flight updates.
Earlier in the day, DIAL said the technical problem that hit the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) was improving. “Airline operations at Delhi Airport are returning to normal, and all concerned authorities are working diligently to minimise any inconvenience,” the statement read.
Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) sits near the heart of Delhi and handles over 1,500 flight movements every day across its four runways. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed it had addressed the AMSS glitch that disrupted flight‑plan messages. An equipment manufacturer was brought in, and extra staff were deployed to manually process flight plans, keeping traffic safe and uninterrupted.
Flight‑tracking data from Flightradar24 shows a sharp drop in delays on Saturday morning: 129 flights (53 arrivals and 76 departures) were delayed, down from almost 800 yesterday.
Passengers and airlines were urged to stay in contact for timely updates. IndiGo, one of the airlines hit hard by the outage, issued a statement saying the AMSS issue had been resolved and that normal operations were “progressively” being restored. IndiGo’s post stressed that while the system was back online, “delays and terminal‑side congestion may continue for some time.” The airline thanked customers for their patience as flights slowly returned to schedule.
The airport operator, along with air‑traffic control teams, is prioritising full system restoration. They expect operations to be completely normalised within a few hours, though some departure and arrival times may still shift as systems stabilise.
Travelers are encouraged to reach out to their airlines and check flight status apps for the latest information. The goal is to keep the airport running safely and efficiently while the system hiccup is resolved.
