India’s government has just rolled out the National Policy on Geothermal Energy for 2025, a big step toward hitting the country’s Net Zero Goal by 2070. This move aims to boost energy security by tapping into diverse renewable energy sources, including the massive untapped geothermal resources right here in India.
Geothermal energy, often called Earth’s hidden heat power, offers a clean and steady way to generate electricity and handle everyday needs. Think district heating, farming boosts through greenhouses, fish farming, and even efficient cooling or heating for homes and buildings using Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs). The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) says this new policy lays out a clear roadmap to explore, develop, and make the most of geothermal energy across India.
The policy pushes for more research, teamwork between government departments, and learning from global leaders in geothermal energy development. MNRE will take charge of regulations and oversight to keep things on track. It ties right into India’s renewable energy targets and Net Zero ambitions, focusing on power generation, space heating and cooling, agriculture like cold storage, tourism spots, and even desalination plants.
Exciting innovations are on the horizon too. The policy spotlights research and development (R&D) for hybrid setups like geothermal-solar plants, upgrading old oil wells for new use, and advanced tech such as Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and Advanced Geothermal Systems (AGS). It encourages local ideas, partnerships with businesses, and smart repurposing of existing oil and gas sites to speed things up.
To build a strong foundation, the policy calls for teaming up with international geothermal experts and top countries in the field. It also ropes in state governments, oil and gas firms, and research institutes to create a vibrant public-private network for long-term growth. Plus, there’s a big emphasis on sharing knowledge and training skilled workers to drive the sector forward.
As an early win, MNRE has already greenlit five geothermal projects. These include pilot tests and assessments to check out the real potential of geothermal energy in different parts of India.
Looking ahead, the ministry promises to keep a close eye on progress and create a supportive space for developers, industries, and researchers to join India’s clean energy revolution. With this policy, geothermal energy could become a game-changer in our push for sustainable power.
