In a light-hearted mix-up ahead of Pakistan’s crucial Asia Cup Super Fours clash with Bangladesh, star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi drew laughs when he blanked on the Tigers’ nickname for the Bangladeshi team.
The funny moment unfolded during a press chat in Dubai on September 24, just before Thursday’s match—the final Super Fours game for both sides. A reporter asked Shaheen if Pakistan would stick with the same playing XI against the Tigers. Looking puzzled, the left-arm pacer shot back in Urdu, "Tiger kaun?"—meaning "Who is Tiger?"
The room burst into chuckles as someone quickly explained it was Bangladesh’s famous moniker. Shaheen grinned and replied, "Ohh, Bangladesh, sorry!" He then laughed it off and addressed the team selection question: "I’ll ask the head coach—sorry, I don’t know."
Despite the fun slip-up, Shaheen knows Bangladesh poses a real threat. The Tigers have struggled against Pakistan in T20 internationals, with just five wins from 25 matches compared to Pakistan’s 20 victories. But Bangladesh turned heads with a 2-1 series win over the Men in Green on home soil back in July.
"Bangladesh is a good team and they’ve been playing well lately," Shaheen said. "When we face strong sides like this, we have to strike first and not give them any openings. We need to play smart cricket in all three phases of the game—batting, bowling, and fielding. Our focus is fully on this Pakistan vs Bangladesh match and how to win it."
Both teams are pushing hard in the Asia Cup to secure a spot in the final. Here’s a look at their squads:
Bangladesh squad: Litton Das (captain), Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain Emon, Saif Hassan, Tawhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali Anik, Shamim Hossain, Quazi Nurul Hasan Sohan, Shakib Al Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Shafiul Islam.
Pakistan squad: Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Waseem Jr., Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Mirza, Shaheen Afridi, Sufyan Muqim.
Cricket fans can’t wait to see if Shaheen and Pakistan can roar past the Tigers in this high-stakes Dubai showdown.
