Calcutta High Court Slams West Bengal Police Over Bribe Allegations Against Female Cop
In a sharp rebuke, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court on Friday pulled up the West Bengal Police for failing to take strict action against a woman officer from Tarakeswar Police Station in Hooghly district. The cop faces serious accusations of demanding a bribe from a local citizen, sparking outrage in the courtroom.
Justices Debangshu Basak and Shabbar Rashidi didn’t hold back. They grilled the police department on why it hadn’t launched proceedings under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, or even filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused officer. "This isn’t just negligence—it’s a massive breach of public trust," the bench remarked, emphasizing that such actions undermine the entire police force’s credibility.
The court pointed out a glaring loophole: While the department did issue a show-cause notice to the officer based on the citizen’s complaint, it completely skipped any mention of the bribe demand. During the hearing, the state government’s counsel tried to defend the police’s moves. He revealed that the officer got suspended on September 17, and an internal departmental probe kicked off right away. The notice also warned her about possible termination for the alleged bribery.
But the bench wasn’t convinced. The counsel mentioned additional charges like negligence and dereliction of duty, yet the judges shot that down. They stressed that demanding bribes goes far beyond simple errors—it’s a betrayal of the trust society places in police personnel.
The court has now given the West Bengal government until September 22 to submit its final stance on the case. Based on that, the bench will decide the next steps, keeping a close watch on how the police handles this bribery scandal.
This development highlights growing concerns over corruption in West Bengal Police, with the high court pushing for swift and transparent action to restore public faith.
