From protest to power play: Youth leaders at the centre of Nepal’s political turmoil

Nepal is facing its biggest political storm in years, with 19 people losing their lives in the chaos, massive protests rocking the streets, and top leaders like Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak stepping down. As the nation grapples with this uncertainty, a fresh wave of young leaders is stepping up, grabbing attention both on the ground and online. These youth figures are driving Nepal’s political unrest and inspiring a new generation to demand change.

Leading the charge is Sudan Gurung, a 36-year-old activist and head of a youth-focused NGO. Gurung first made waves during the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake, where he jumped in to organize relief efforts. Since then, his organization has expanded into a nationwide force, tackling everything from humanitarian aid to civic projects. In the current Nepal protests, they’ve turned to social media to rally supporters—sharing digital flyers and even a handy guide called “How to Protest.” Thousands showed up at spots like Maitighar Mandala, many dressed in school uniforms with books and bags in hand, symbolizing a push for peaceful resistance amid the civil unrest in Nepal.

Another rising star is Balendra Shah, the Mayor of Kathmandu, better known as “Balen.” This rapper-turned-politician has become the go-to voice for Nepal’s urban youth, especially on social media where Gen Z fans flock to him. During the height of the unrest, Balen posted a heartfelt Facebook message urging everyone to stay peaceful and exercise restraint. It came right after the big resignations, sparking a flood of online buzz with people begging him to take on a bigger role in Nepal’s political shift.

Don’t forget Rabi Lamichhane, the Chairperson of the Rastriya Swatantra Party. A former TV journalist who even holds a Guinness World Record, Lamichhane briefly served as Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. He’s been in the spotlight lately for legal headaches, like a citizenship row and an arrest tied to a cooperative savings scandal. But despite the drama, Lamichhane commands a loyal following and stays a major player in Nepal’s evolving political scene.

These emerging youth leaders are at the heart of Nepal’s current turmoil, blending activism, social media savvy, and bold ideas to shape the future. As protests continue and the country seeks stability, all eyes are on them to guide the way forward.
