Shillong, Dec 1 (LatestNewsX) – Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Monday that his government has kept farmers at the heart of its agenda, explaining that this focus has already translated into tangible benefits for those in the agrarian sector.
Sangma was present at the 4th World Organic Youth Summit in Shillong, which ran concurrently with the first Northeast India Organic Week + Buyer‑Seller Meet. He told the crowd that the state’s policies and programmes are designed to support and lift farmers, and that the summit’s spirit of learning, sharing, and helping will continue even after the three‑day event ends. “Farmers are an important part of our policies, and our different mission‑mode programmes in Agriculture and allied sectors are to push the farmers and give them the necessary support and help,” he said.
On Meghalaya’s push for organic agriculture, Sangma stressed that organic farming is not merely a “buzzword.” Instead, it reflects the deep-rooted knowledge, traditions, and practices that have shaped the region’s farming for generations. He also highlighted agriculture, tourism, and the service industry as cornerstones of the government’s strategy. “We are very keen to see a strong convergence between tourism and agriculture, especially organic farming, so many activities in the tourism sector are now linked to the organic mission along with entrepreneurship programmes.”
Expressing pride that the summit was hosted in Shillong, Sangma concluded that the event had opened doors for sharing ancestral knowledge and practices with the world, marking the start of new relationships, experience‑sharing opportunities, and networking.
After the speeches, he met with international delegates who asked about Meghalaya’s vision, the use of technology, logistics support, and other aspects relevant to young organic entrepreneurs. The Organic Meghalaya Compendium and the Megnolia website were unveiled and launched during the same occasion.
