The United States is officially ending the penny, and the news has sparked a frantic online frenzy. Sellers on eBay, Etsy, and other marketplaces are listing rolls of 2025 pennies for anywhere from a few hundred dollars to more than a thousand. The listings feel like a gold rush, but experts warn that most of those prices are pure hype – not the real value of the coins.
Why are pennies selling for big money?
The U.S. Mint announced that 2025 pennies would be the last one‑cent coins produced. Because the penny has been in the news a lot, some people thought the coins were suddenly rare and valuable. The truth is different.
John Feigenbaum, a seasoned coin dealer and the head of the Professional Numismatists Guild, explains that the penny isn’t rare. The Mint produced billions in 2024 and will produce almost a billion in 2025. When a government paper report says “the penny will go out of circulation,” no market forces suddenly make the coins worth thousands.
“They’re just the same wallet‑sized penny,” Feigenbaum says. “Unless the Mint or professional dealers put a special mark on them, they’re worth face value.”
The “Omega penny” that does have a premium
The only 2025 penny that might fetch a high price is the Omega‑marked coin. The Mint struck 232 of these in Philadelphia, 232 in Denver, and 232 gold‑colored versions. These tiny, officially recognized commemorative pennies will be sold at auction in December and could command prices up to $5 million, according to coin experts.
Feigenbaum notes, “Without the Omega mark, you’re just looking at a normal penny. With the Omega mark, collectors are willing to pay ten or twenty thousand dollars.”
What the data actually show
Online listings are misleading. Prices on eBay run from $500 to $1,500 for a full box of 2025 pennies – a box that contains exactly 240 rolls of 50 pennies, or 12,000 coins. Some sellers claim they only paid $20 for a single roll. But that $20 is the resale price, not the value of the coins themselves.
If you’re a casual collector or someone who found a penny in the pantry, the price to pay stays close to the buy‑in amount from a reputable dealer. Dealers typically buy pennies at around 2 cents each – the cost to the Mint – and sell them for a small premium in the fine coin market. The huge discounts or steep premiums we see online are simply the result of opportunists exploiting people’s confusion.
How to spot real versus fake value
- Look for the Omega mark. That tiny little “Ω” is the only thing that turns a 2025 penny into a collector’s piece.
- Check reputable dealers. Good dealers will give you a fair wholesale price before adding a small retail markup.
- Beware of outrageous numbers. If the price looks too good (or too bad) to be true, it probably isn’t.
- Ask your local coin shop. Good dealers are more than happy to explain why a penny that’s physically identical to a 2024 dollar can’t suddenly be worth $1,000.
The bigger picture: scarcity and value
Feigenbaum reminds people of the 1976 bicentennial coin craze, when Americans hoarded specially designed quarters and half‑dollars, only to find they were worth about face value. The lesson is simple: if a Mint releases billions of a coin, it isn’t rare. U.S. one‑cent coins are no exception, unless the Mint designs a future limited issue for collectors.
Pennies aren’t turning into treasure. The only exception is the specially minted Omega‑pennies, which are genuinely scarce and can reach sky‑high auction prices. For the rest of us, a 2025 penny’s value in the market is marginal – a small edge over its face value. So if you see a $1,000 listing for a roll of ordinary pennies, you’re looking at a marketing bluff, not a legitimate coin value.
If you’re curious about whether a specific listing is legitimate, the best move is to contact a third‑party coin dealer or the Professional Numismatists Guild for guidance. For ordinary pennies, keep the price close to what dealers would normally pay, and don’t let the flashy headlines fool you.
