On Tuesday, New Delhi’s Lt. Governor V. K. Saxena attended the first hot‑air‑balloon trial organized by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) at Baansera, beside the Yamuna, according to officials.
The DDA claims the project will add a fresh layer to Delhi’s skyline and boost the city’s eco‑tourism and adventure‑sports options. Conceived and overseen by the Lt. Governor, who has been steering the agency’s push to create public recreation spaces and revitalize the Yamuna floodplain, the initiative underscores the DDA’s dedication to sustainable tourism and enhanced leisure experiences.
Once the pilot proves successful, the DDA plans to launch tethered balloon rides at four sites: Baansera, Asita, the Yamuna Sports Complex, and the Commonwealth Games Village Sports Complex. “Following the successful trial at Baansera, public operations are expected to begin soon,” the statement read. “The service will provide residents and visitors with a unique aerial view of Delhi’s natural scenery, riverbanks, and cityscape, greatly expanding the city’s tourism appeal.”
Flights will be allowed for up to four hours each day, though the duration can be extended as needed. The peak season for ballooning in North India runs from November to February, when conditions are most favorable, and public rides will open in the near future.
The DDA has long been involved in cleaning up and rejuvenating the Yamuna, and numerous projects are underway along its banks. Asita, once encroached land, has now been turned into a green, attractive park. Baansera Bamboo Park, located at Sarai Kale Khan, was once a site for construction and demolition waste but now features over 30,000 bamboo plants, three water bodies, and a musical fountain. The Yamuna Sports Complex in Surajmal Vihar is the largest sports complex built by the DDA, while the Commonwealth Games Sports Complex, constructed for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, serves as a key venue for the upcoming balloon rides.
