Bangladesh: Awami League flags rise of ‘mob terrorism’ under Yunus-led interim govt

Bangladesh’s largest opposition party, the Awami League, bluntly accused the Muhammad Yunus‑led interim government of steering the country toward an unstable future. The party says the new administration has turned to “mob terrorism” and state‑backed violence to stay in power.

Since the interim regime seized control, Awami League officials claim that violence in Bangladesh has surged. Reports of murder, rape, theft, robbery, looting and mugging have risen sharply, and the party argues the government keeps citizens unsafe. They say that when a state sponsors terror against its own people, the rule of law disappears and public order disintegrates.

The Awami League also criticised the police and the courts for using “terror” to crush opposition. They point to the Chattogram Police Commissioner’s casual talk about “brush fires” (summary shootings) and say that the state’s lack of legitimacy drives it to use fear as a survival tool.

Human‑rights groups have warned about this rise in violence for months. In March, a national newspaper reported a 6.16 % increase in terrorism. Later, activists said state‑sponsored attacks kept climbing.

The party says extrajudicial killings, custodial murders and unidentified bodies are growing. They accuse the interim government of targeting Awami League leaders—killing them in prisons, killing them outside, and unleashing “mob terrorism” through attacks, killings and looting.

Awami League officials also slammed the interim government for stripping citizens of democratic rights. Mass arrests of the party’s leaders and activists, they say, were carried out without proper charges. The ruling team allegedly uses the judiciary to create fake cases and smear the opposition, and they keep detainees in custody for days on end.

In total, the Awami League’s statement paints the interim administration as a government that suppresses dissent, breeds widespread violence, and ignores human‑rights concerns, all while clinging to power through terror tactics.
