North Korea Hackers Use AI Deepfakes to Target South Korean Military
Hackers linked to North Korea have launched a sneaky cyberattack on South Korean organizations, including a key defense group. They used AI-generated deepfake images to trick their targets, according to a new report from South Korea’s Genians Security Center (GSC).
The culprits? A notorious group called Kimsuky, which experts believe gets backing from the North Korean government. In July, they tried a spear-phishing attack on a military-related organization. Spear-phishing is like a personalized scam where hackers send fake emails pretending to be from someone you trust, often with harmful attachments.
In this case, the attackers emailed a malicious file disguised as official mail about issuing IDs for military officials. The fake ID card image in the email looked super realistic—thanks to generative AI creating a deepfake version. This marks a first for Kimsuky, showing how they’re leveling up their cyberattack game with artificial intelligence.
Normally, popular AI tools like ChatGPT won’t create copies of real military IDs because they’re protected government documents. But the hackers got around this by asking for "mock-ups" or sample designs, pretending it was for legit reasons. Clever workaround, right?
This isn’t the first sign of North Korea misusing AI. Back in August, U.S. company Anthropic (makers of the AI tool Claude) released a report on how North Korean IT workers fake virtual identities with AI. They use these tricks to pass job interviews abroad, dodging sanctions and earning cash for their regime.
GSC warns that North Korea is ramping up its use of AI for more advanced cyber threats. "AI boosts productivity, but it can turn into a national security nightmare when hackers get hold of it," the report says. They urge organizations to stay alert—beef up security checks in hiring, daily ops, and business deals to spot AI misuse early.
As AI deepfakes and cyberattacks grow, staying vigilant is key to protecting sensitive info. This incident highlights the rising risks in the world of North Korea hacking and AI security.
