Thousands of British-Bangladeshis and Bangladeshi expats came together in London’s famous Trafalgar Square on Monday for a massive Rally for Bangladesh. The event turned into a powerful show of unity, with crowds chanting slogans and demanding an end to what they call the repressive Yunus regime in Bangladesh.
Organizers from the Bangladesh Awami League shared the excitement on their official X account. “The streets of London echoed with Joy Bangla chants today as thousands gathered to reject the Yunus regime,” they posted. British-Bangladeshis and overseas Bangladeshis filled the historic square to voice their frustration over the crackdown on democratic rights back home.
The choice of Trafalgar Square held deep meaning. Back in 1971, the same spot hosted huge gatherings of Bengalis fighting to spotlight Bangladesh’s Liberation War. Over 50 years later, it buzzed again with that same fighting spirit. The Awami League pointed out how the Joy Bangla slogan—once a symbol of freedom—now faces bans under Yunus and his allies.
Things have gotten tough in Bangladesh, the party said. Supporters of the Awami League face arrests every day under the Anti-Terrorism Act just for speaking out or joining rallies. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, journalists, and even veterans from the 1971 war have landed in jail for standing up for the values of independence. Hundreds of thousands of activists and ordinary folks have been targeted by the regime.
This rally wasn’t just a protest—it was a heartfelt message of support. The diaspora wanted to tell those suffering in Bangladesh: You’re not alone. The event highlighted the ongoing Bangladesh political crisis and the global call for democracy in the country.
