Scindia meets FM Sitharaman to boost digital infra, regional connectivity

New Delhi, Oct 23 – Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia met with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and senior finance officials to map out ways to speed up India’s digital infrastructure and boost regional connectivity. The talks focused on capital‑expenditure priorities for the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the Ministry of Development of the Northeastern Region (MDoNER) and India Post.

Scindia posted on X that the meeting was “constructive” and that they “explored strategies to accelerate digital infrastructure development, enhance regional connectivity, and modernise services with optimal resource allocation and stronger impact.” He said the team wants to make these sectors—especially telecom, postal services and northeastern development—key engines of growth and inclusion under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Last week, Scindia highlighted a record spend of ₹3 447.71 crore on northeast projects for FY 2024‑25, a 74.4 % jump from the previous year and a tripling over three years. He praised MDoNER’s focus on fiscal discipline, digital monitoring and timely delivery as drivers of this growth.

India’s telecom sector is on track to lift its share of the GDP from the current 12‑14 % to about 20 % over the next decade. The country’s indigenous 4G technology stack—completed in just 20 months—makes it the fifth nation worldwide to develop a full 4G suite from scratch. Scindia added that BSNL plans to expand its 4G coverage and eventually roll out 5G services.

India now serves 1.2 billion mobile subscribers, accounting for roughly 20 % of the global mobile population. The government’s aggressive investment in digital infrastructure, digital monitoring and niche projects in the northeast signals a strong push toward a more connected, self‑reliant India.
