Human skeletal remains found in trash bag by NYC sanitation workers

Sanitation workers in Queens made a chilling discovery Monday morning when they found skeletal remains believed to be from a woman inside a garbage bag near John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The find happened around 7:45 a.m. at Brookville Boulevard and 149th Avenue in Springfield Gardens, right by the edge of Idlewild Park, according to the New York Police Department. Officers rushed to the scene after a 911 call reported possible human remains.

Two workers from the New York City Department of Sanitation had already loaded the suspicious bag into their truck’s hopper. But then a strong foul odor hit them, raising alarms. Sources say the bag was tightly wrapped in tape and rope—and photos show it covered in a blue tarp. Worried it might hold a body, they stopped everything and called for help.

Emergency medical services arrived and confirmed the remains looked like those of an adult woman. The site sits near Idlewild Park, a peaceful nature preserve with one of Queens’ biggest saltwater marshes, just north of the busy JFK Airport.

Police say the Office of Chief Medical Examiner will now step in to figure out the woman’s identity and cause of death. The NYPD investigation into this Queens body discovery continues as they probe how the remains ended up there.
