An 82-year-old man lost his life and his adult son was badly injured after a fast-moving fire tore through their Long Island residence late Sunday night, officials said.
Police identified the victim as Barry Garfman, who was inside the multi-family house with his 42-year-old son, Dustin Garfman, when the blaze broke out around 11:15 p.m. on Depot Road near Leyden Street in Huntington Station, according to Suffolk County authorities.
Multiple fire crews rushed to the scene, with five different fire departments responding to battle the flames. Despite their efforts, Barry Garfman was unable to escape and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dustin Garfman was pulled from the home and taken to Huntington Hospital before being transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital. He remains in serious condition, police said.
Investigators were still working Monday to determine what sparked the fire. Authorities said there were no immediate signs that the incident was suspicious or criminal in nature.
