Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong visited India for the first time on September 2, marking an important step in strengthening the India-Singapore partnership. During his three-day trip, Wong met with India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss boosting their trade and investment ties.
Wong’s visit also coincides with the 60th anniversary of India and Singapore establishing diplomatic relations. His visit highlights the growing closeness between the two countries, with both sides eager to work together on several key areas.
Wong was welcomed by Finance Minister Sitharaman, and foreign leaders from Singapore, including Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow and Minister of State Gan Siow Huang, also joined the discussions. The focus of their talks was on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, financial technology (fintech), skill development, sustainability, healthcare, and connectivity.
Both countries agreed to deepen their partnership in these sectors, aiming for closer collaboration. The visit is expected to result in the signing of multiple agreements covering finance, digital innovation, civil aviation, maritime projects, and space technology.
This trip follows the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable held in New Delhi on August 13. During that meeting, leaders reviewed progress in six key areas: manufacturing, connectivity, digital change, health and medicines, skill training, and sustainability. They also identified new initiatives to boost cooperation in these important fields.
Overall, the visit underscores the strong diplomatic and economic ties between India and Singapore, and their shared goal to work together for mutual growth and development.
