DGCA reviews airfare trends ahead of festive season, asks airlines to add more flights

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is stepping up its watch on airline prices as the festive travel rush approaches. The regulator, guided by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, said it is urging carriers to add more flights so passengers don’t see sharp fare hikes.
Because ticket demand surges during the holidays, the DGCA has called on airlines to boost capacity. IndiGo will add about 730 extra flights on 42 routes, Air India and Air India Express will launch roughly 486 new flights on 20 routes, and SpiceJet plans to increase its schedule by around 546 flights on 38 routes.
A DGCA official said the regulator will keep a close eye on both prices and flight numbers to protect travellers. “We want enough seats available so that fares stay reasonable during the festive period,” the official added.
Over the past few years, the DGCA has tightened its monitoring of the industry. From 2020 to June 2025, it carried out 171 regulatory audits to boost safety and transparency. It has also conducted special audits of airlines, maintenance firms and flying schools after the recent Air India crash in Ahmedabad.
The goal: keep fares affordable while maintaining high safety standards for passengers flying home for the holidays.
