Mirabai Chanu claims silver medal in 48kg division at World Weightlifting Championships 2025

India’s Mirabai Chanu snagged a silver medal in the women’s 48kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Førde, Norway. The Olympic star lifted a total of 199kg on Friday, marking a strong comeback after the Paris 2024 Games.

North Korea’s Ri Song-gum stole the show, sweeping gold in all three events to claim her second straight overall world title. She nailed a 91kg snatch and a stunning 122kg clean and jerk—setting a new world record. Ri’s total of 213kg also broke the world record, dominating the opening day, according to Olympics.com.

Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen took bronze with 198kg, rounding out an exciting 48kg division.

The championships continue in Norway, with the women’s 53kg and men’s 60kg events up next on Saturday. Chanu, 31, returned to competition by winning gold in the 48kg at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in August. She’s no stranger to the world stage—grabbing gold in 48kg at the 2017 Worlds in Anaheim and silver in 49kg at the 2022 edition in Bogota.

For India’s men, Commonwealth Games bronze winner Lovepreet Singh leads the charge in the 110kg+ class. He also earned bronze at this year’s Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, where teammates Ajith Narayana and Ajaya Babu Valluri claimed gold.
