India’s logistics sector is making big strides thanks to the National Logistics Policy, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17, 2022. This policy aims to slash logistics costs, boost digital integration, and help India match global standards. Over the past three years, it has worked hand-in-hand with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan to build better infrastructure, train workers, and roll out key reforms.
One star performer is the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP). This digital powerhouse has powered over 160 crore transactions by linking more than 30 systems through secure APIs. It simplifies supply chain processes, giving businesses clear visibility and faster operations—whether for local deliveries or international trade.
Adding to the wins, the Logistics Data Bank has monitored over 75 million EXIM containers across 101 inland depots. This real-time tracking cuts delays and keeps companies in the loop, making logistics smoother and more reliable.
Thanks to these efforts, India has climbed to the 38th spot in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index. Tools like the LEADS index, LEAPS awards, and regular logistics cost checks are driving even more changes. Plus, the government is building massive Multi-Modal Logistics Parks with features like cold storage, packaging, and on-site customs clearance to support seamless multimodal transport.
Sustainability is a key focus too. Initiatives such as the Transportation Emissions Measurement Tool (TEMT), created by IIM Bangalore, help firms track and reduce emissions, aligning with worldwide green standards. On the education front, over 100 institutes now offer logistics courses, and more than 65,000 professionals have received training since 2023.
That said, challenges like infrastructure gaps and uneven regulations still linger. Officials are tackling them with a “whole of government” push under PM GatiShakti, fostering teamwork between the Centre, states, and private sector to build a stronger logistics network for India’s future.
