Mohanlal, the beloved star of Malayalam cinema, just received India’s top honor in filmmaking—the Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award. President Droupadi Murmu handed him the trophy during a special ceremony on Tuesday.
Fans in Kerala call him Lalettan, and he’s been entertaining audiences for nearly five decades with his versatile roles in drama, action, comedy, and thrillers. The award celebrates his huge impact on Indian cinema, from his natural acting style to his spot-on dialogue delivery.
Mohanlal kicked off his career in 1978 with a small part in the film Thiranottam, which finally hit screens in 2005. He shot to fame in the 1980s and 1990s, starring in over 350 movies across languages like Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada. Some of his standout hits include Rajavinte Makan, which turned him into an action icon, plus classics like Kireedam, Bharatham, Vanaprastham, Kilukkam, Narasimham, and Spadikam. He’s also left his mark in Hindi and Tamil films, shining in Iruvar (1997) and Company (2002).
Over the years, Mohanlal has scooped up five National Film Awards and nine Kerala State Film Awards. Beyond the screen, he gives back through philanthropy and by boosting arts and culture in Kerala. His widespread appeal across India and steady contributions make him one of the most admired actors in the country.
The event was part of the 71st National Film Awards, held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. It kicked off soon after key guests arrived, including President Murmu, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw, filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, director P. Sheshadri, and author Gopalakrishna Pai.
