Brown University gunman is ‘extremely angry’ loner who wanted to kill — but not die, criminal profiler says
A suspect is still on the run after a 40‑round firing spree at Brown University on Saturday, leaving two students dead and injuring nine others. Video that the police released shows the attacker—a stocky, masked male—prowling a tree‑lined stretch of the campus neighborhood in the hours before the shooting.
John Kelly, a criminal‑profiling specialist, told Fox News that the gunman was “extremely angry” and had a deep fear of getting caught. “He took great pains to scope out the area and secure an escape route. Why? Because he’s scared of getting caught,” Kelly said. “So it looks like a cause he’s not willing to die for, but a cause he’s extremely angry over,” he added.
Kelly believes the shooter was a lone individual who vents his fury in a private online space. “I believe he’s probably a loner who expresses [his anger] in the confines of a private place online,” he explained.
The profiled suspect also appears to be obsessed with how the media portrays him. “He’s watching everything he can about himself on the news. All these guys have a certain amount of paranoia, I believe this guy is no different. He wants to kill kids but he’s scared of doing the time for it,” John Kelly said.
Students returned to the engineering building they fled on Dec. 16 with flowers left by senior Zoe Kass and her boyfriend, a small gesture of remembrance amid the ongoing fear.
According to Providence Police, the authorities are continuing to monitor the suspect’s movements as they piece together the details of this violent attack.
