New labour reforms will transform workers’ lives: NFITU

In New Delhi on Saturday, Dr. Deepak Kumar Jaiswal, who leads CONSENT and heads the National Front of Indian Trade Unions (NFITU), greeted the Indian government’s fresh labour codes as a breakthrough move to protect workers’ dignity, safeguard their health, and secure fair pay. Speaking to LatestNewsX, he noted that the changes show the Prime Minister’s pledge to reinforce worker rights and overhaul India’s labour framework to match international practices.

Dr. Jaiswal praised the inclusion of “time‑bound minimum wages,” calling it a landmark policy that should crack down on exploitation and offer much‑needed stability to the workforce. He observed that recent talks with Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya strengthened the government’s resolve to enact reforms that truly benefit employees, and that the resulting laws will visibly improve the lives of millions.

He highlighted the focus on female workers, applauding the rules that guarantee equal pay, eliminate gender discrimination, and provide safer working environments. He stressed that women now make up a large part of the labour market and that the administration has taken their concerns seriously.

The extension of social security to over 40 crore workers was another point he lauded as a significant sign of the Prime Minister’s dedication to safeguarding all Indian workers. Dr. Jaiswal added that NFITU, which works with 14 major unions, undertook extensive consultations before the final drafts, ensuring that workers’ perspectives were fully represented.

When discussing the new provisions—such as “double wages for overtime” and “free health check‑ups for workers above 40”—he praised the government for putting workers’ dignity and quality of life at the forefront. He went on to say that India’s labour laws are now on par with global standards.

He urged that, even though some unions have historically resorted to frequent strikes, the overarching aim should be constructive dialogue and recognition when the government acts positively. Dr. Jaiswal reminded that earlier administrations, even under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had not delivered on these demands, despite repeated requests. As a neutral labour body, NFITU will continue to voice criticism where needed while acknowledging the positive steps taken for workers’ benefit.
