Kerala Govt Medical College Teachers Association to launch protests over long-standing grievances
Doctors in Kerala’s government medical colleges are stepping up their fight against long-ignored problems. The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA) plans a statewide candlelight protest and sit-ins at all 12 medical colleges starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. This move highlights growing frustration among faculty over unpaid salaries, delayed dearness allowances, and pay discrepancies for entry-level staff.
Kerala boasts 12 key government medical colleges that offer 1,755 MBBS seats, playing a vital role in the state’s medical education system. But teachers say the government hasn’t created enough new posts in recently opened colleges. Instead, officials relocate existing faculty, which worsens staffing shortages and hurts both teaching quality and patient care. These issues also block young doctors from joining the workforce.
The association isn’t backing down. After a “black day” protest on September 22 and a statewide sit-in the next day, they’re escalating again. If the government doesn’t act, a bigger sit-in hits at 1 p.m. on October 10. KGMCTA leaders, including President Dr. Roshnara Begum T. and General Secretary Dr. Aravind C.S., warn of tougher steps ahead—like boycotting classes or even striking outpatient services.
Despite promises from the state cabinet, no real fixes have come. Faculty members want quick payments for salary and allowance backlogs, fixes for pay anomalies, and more hires to keep medical education strong and healthcare running smoothly in Kerala.
This latest push in the KGMCTA protests shows how serious these medical college faculty grievances have become. Teachers hope it forces the government to tackle these demands before things get worse.
