Texas rep accuses Trump admin of dishonesty about border encounter numbers

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat from Texas who is campaigning for the U.S. Senate, told NBC’s “Meet the Press NOW” that she doubts the accuracy of the border‑security figures released by President Donald Trump’s administration.

In the interview, she criticized the data as “not the most honest” and questioned whether the president’s policies truly have lowered border encounters.

NBC News’ Gabe Gutierrez opened the conversation by noting that immigration is a top concern in Texas and that Rep. Crockett has long opposed the current administration’s mass‑deportation plan and its actions at the International‑Coast Guard (ICE).

“You obviously have issues with the way he’s going about it,” Gutierrez said, “but has the president been successful—can you acknowledge that—on bringing border encounters down?” The congresswoman replied that she is not convinced the numbers reported by the administration are trustworthy.

“We’ll acknowledge that what is being reported is that border encounters are lower,” Crockett said. “I will also say that we know that this administration has not been the most honest when it comes to reporting numbers, as we know that there’s now reporting that they have not been honest about the jobs numbers.” She went on to describe Trump’s enforcement approach as “inhumane” and highlighted several troubling aspects of the administration’s record.

“What I can tell you is that he has invoked a very inhumane way of carrying out immigration,” Crockett said. “What I also can tell you is that he has not worked through the Congress, and that’s what we need is comprehensive immigration reform.

What I also can tell you is that we have a historic number of people that have died in ICE custody since he’s been in. What I also can tell you is that we have a historic number of American citizens that have been rounded up, and what I can also tell you is that this Supreme Court, unfortunately, has basically given him carte blanche to go after people because of an accent or because of what they look like, and that is wrong.”

While Trump’s team cited a record low in U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions for fiscal year 2025, the statistics have been a point of contention. The administration announced that CBP reported 237,565 southwest‑border apprehensions in the fiscal year ending 2025, down from 201,780 in 1970. The figure is framed by the White House as evidence of a “most secure” border and a successful policy.

In a separate statement to Fox News Digital, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson dismissed the congresswoman’s claims, calling them “a bizarre conspiracy theory from a woman who couldn’t even properly read the FEC website before telling lies on the House floor.” She reaffirmed that the current administration believes the border is “the most secure in history” and that Trump’s strategies are effectively deporting dangerous, criminal aliens.
