Congress’ TN chief Selvaperunthugai slams BJP for ‘playing politics’ over Karur stampede

In Chennai, Congress leader K. Selvaperunthagai slammed the BJP on Thursday for turning the tragic Karur stampede into a political game. The incident happened at actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally, where a crowd crush claimed 41 lives, leaving families heartbroken.

Speaking in Udhagamandalam in the Nilgiris district, Selvaperunthagai joined a Congress-led signature drive against what the party calls “vote theft” by opponents. He zeroed in on the BJP’s new eight-member fact-finding team, headed by Lok Sabha MP Hema Malini, to look into the Karur tragedy.

“Why send outsiders who can’t even tell north from south in Karur?” Selvaperunthagai asked, calling the move a clear bid for political points instead of real help for victims. He pointed out that Tamil Nadu’s government already set up a judicial probe under retired Madras High Court Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to dig into what caused the stampede.

“This official investigation covers everything that went wrong,” he said. “The BJP’s panel just stirs up trouble for votes.”

Selvaperunthagai stood up for the Tamil Nadu Police, pushing back against claims of negligence. “Footage from the scene shows officers working hard to save people, acting with real professionalism even in chaos,” he noted.

He accused the BJP of dodging its own shortcomings while attacking the state. “They’re stealing votes on one side and cashing in on innocent deaths on the other,” he charged.

Praising Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Selvaperunthagai highlighted the quick response from Stalin’s team. “If the BJP can’t give credit to the CM’s strong leadership and the state’s solid handling of this disaster, they should just keep quiet instead of sowing doubt.”

He also called out the central government for ignoring bigger issues, like the ongoing violence in Manipur. “Deaths keep piling up there, but no fact-finding team shows up. Yet in Tamil Nadu, where the state is stepping up responsibly, the BJP rushes in to exploit grieving families.”

Selvaperunthagai urged everyone to ignore this “heartless political opportunism” and rallied support for those hit by the Karur stampede. The tragedy has sparked widespread calls for better crowd safety at big events in Tamil Nadu.
