Jean Smart just made history at the Emmys, snagging the Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award for her stellar role in Hacks. The veteran actress won big on Sunday night in Los Angeles, proving once again why she’s a force in Hollywood.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Smart didn’t hold back on the thanks. "Thank you so much, you honor me so much," she said, beaming on stage. She called out the Hacks cast, especially her co-star Hannah Einbinder, whom she dubbed "incomparable." Smart also praised the show’s brilliant showrunners, the hardworking crew, and everyone at HBO Max, Universal Television, and the Television Academy. "One of the best things about winning something like this is that you actually get to publicly thank the people you work with," she added, keeping it real and warm.
She saved some sweet words for her family too, shouting out her kids: "And my children who are my anchor, Joe, my cheerleader." Wrapping up, Smart urged the crowd, "Everybody, let’s be good to each other. Just be good to each other. Thank you!"
Smart beat out tough competition in the category, including Ayo Edebiri from The Bear, Kristen Bell for Nobody Wants This, Quinta Brunson of Abbott Elementary, and Uzo Aduba in The Residence. This isn’t her first rodeo—earlier this year, she grabbed a Golden Globe for Hacks, and she even won an Emmy for the same show last year.
Created by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky, Hacks stars Smart as a legendary comedian and Einbinder as her young writer.
