Julia Roberts is buzzing with excitement as talks heat up for a sequel to her iconic rom-com My Best Friend’s Wedding. The Hollywood superstar recently spilled the beans to Variety magazine, confirming she’s in early discussions with the filmmakers. "They’re talking to me," she said with a smile, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
Director Luca Guadagnino, known for hits like the psychological thriller After the Hunt (where Roberts stars alongside Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, and Chloe Sevigny), jumped in too. He told Variety he’d direct Roberts in the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel "in a second" – talk about dream team vibes!
The sequel news first dropped in July, with acclaimed writer Celine Song (Past Lives and Materialists) on board to craft the screenplay. She’s not directing, but her fresh take has everyone intrigued. This comes right after Dermot Mulroney, who played Roberts’ on-screen love interest in the 1997 original, hinted to the New York Post that "there is talk of a sequel." Mulroney’s tease sparked the wildfire of rumors!
For those who need a quick refresher, My Best Friend’s Wedding follows Julia Roberts as Julianne Potter, a sharp-witted food critic who realizes she’s head over heels for her best friend Michael O’Neal (Mulroney). They once pinky-swore to marry if single by 28, but now he’s tying the knot with someone else – enter Cameron Diaz as his bubbly fiancée. Julianne’s hilarious (and chaotic) plot to crash the wedding, with Rupert Everett stealing scenes as her witty sidekick, made it a classic. The film raked in $127 million in North America alone and snagged three Golden Globe nods, cementing its spot as one of 1997’s top-grossing movies.
While we wait for more My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel updates, Roberts has another big project brewing. In After the Hunt, she plays Alma Olsson, a college professor tangled in a messy sexual abuse scandal with a student and colleague. Directed by Guadagnino, it hits theaters on October 10, 2025 – mark your calendars!
