Congress Slams Pakistan-Saudi Arabia Defence Pact as Blow to India’s Security
The Congress party has hit out hard at the new defence agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, calling it a major threat to India’s security and a flop for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high-profile diplomacy. They shared their worries on social media, pointing to a string of recent global meetings that could spell trouble for India.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh took to X (formerly Twitter) to highlight key events after India paused Operation Sindoor a month ago. He noted how US President Donald Trump hosted Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir for lunch at the White House. Ramesh called Munir out for his "inflammatory and provocative" statements that fueled the deadly terrorist attacks in Pahalgam back in April 2025.
Just days after PM Modi’s big visit to China, Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari into a secretive military complex. And now, Saudi Arabia – where PM Modi was during the Pahalgam attacks on April 22, 2025 – has inked a strategic mutual defence pact with Pakistan.
"This is a grave concern for India’s national security," Ramesh posted. "The Indian National Congress is deeply worried and sees this as yet another setback to our Prime Minister’s personality-driven diplomacy." You can check out his full post here.
The pact was signed on Wednesday during a visit by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Riyadh, invited by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. A joint statement described it as building on nearly 80 years of ties, rooted in brotherhood, Islamic solidarity, and shared defence goals. Under the agreement, any attack on one country counts as an attack on both, aiming to boost joint security and deter threats in the region and beyond.
India’s response has been cautious. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it knew about this "long-standing arrangement" being formalized and will closely watch its impact. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stressed that India’s national security comes first.
"We’ll study how this affects our national security, regional stability, and global peace," the MEA statement read. "The government is fully committed to safeguarding India’s interests across all fronts."
This development has sparked debates on India-Pakistan relations, Saudi Arabia’s role in the Middle East, and how global powers like the US and China are influencing South Asian security. As tensions simmer, eyes are on how India navigates these shifting alliances.
