Shashi Tharoor took to X on Saturday to wish veteran BJP leader and Bharat Ratna awardee Lal Krishna Advani a happy 98th birthday. The Congress MP called Advani a “true statesman” whose work has left an indelible mark on modern India.
He added, “His unwavering commitment to public service, modesty and decency make him a role model. A true statesman, his life of service is exemplary.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stopped by Advani’s home earlier that day. Modi greeted him, wishing good health and a long life.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also posted his wishes, calling the former BJP president an inspiration for millions of party workers. “Bharat Ratna LK Advani devoted his life to the nation. From strengthening the party at the grassroots to fortifying our internal security, his contribution is unmatched. His leadership in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement awakened a national conscience,” Shah wrote.
Former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu sent a heartfelt message too: “Seeing Advani, a towering figure in Indian politics, I wish him the best. His patriotism, discipline and dedication set a benchmark for young people. May God grant him perfect health.”
Advani was born in Karachi on 8 November 1927 and grew up in the aftermath of India’s Partition. He studied at St. Patrick’s School in Karachi and later at Bombay Law College. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at 14, began as a journalist with the weekly Organiser, and rose to become one of India’s most influential political thinkers and leaders.
